KUTA DANCE TEATER

The group was founded since 2014 with the vision to preserve and promote the traditional arts of the Gayo people from Central Aceh, focusing on performing arts—dance and theater. In its journey, the group discovered several traditional dances that had disappeared. One of its most notable achievements was the rediscovery of Tari Sining, a once-extinct dance, in 2016.

KDT has continued to innovate by creating new choreographies such as Tari Sengkaren Utem and Upuh Kio (2018), Tari Mulawi (2019), and the dance drama Prang Senie (2021). The group also conducts cultural research, such as reviving the lost Gayo weaving tradition (2020) and documenting the traditional knowledge and heroism of Aman Nyerang (2021).

With a strong commitment to cultural empowerment, KDT aims to integrate Gayo culture as a source of local economic development across Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, and Gayo Lues. One key innovation includes transforming traditional Gayo weaving into a contemporary form known as Tenun Kerawang Gayo. KDT remains focused on performing arts, cultural research, and the sustainable advancement of Gayo heritage.
